It was a very strong start to the Melbourne Premier Sale with an average of $144,109 and a clearance rate of over 83% -an excellent job done by Inglis and vendors backed by a strong buying bench.

Richard Laming knows the Toronado breed very well and wasn’t going to be beaten on this filly. A half-sister to TWO stakeswinners, she has enormous residual value and was one of the best Toronado fillies in the sale. Whilst this filly won’t be going to Hong Kong like Master Montaro, she is sure to give her owners plenty of fun. Tony Noonan knows this family very well with Rusheen, the full brother to this colt, winning on debut for his stable and heading to the $1 Million SHOWDOWN race. Bred by Miranda Park, this colt was incredibly well bought by Paul and Mike Moroney. We thought he was worth a fair bit more than his purchase price but, one of the best in the business was able to snap up a bargain. Bred on the potent Galileo / Dubawi cross, Liam Howley picked up this colt at a bargain price. We thought he was one of the best colts on the farm from the day he was born. With over 50% sold already, Liam would love to hear from anyone interested and can be contacted on 0402 133 958.
A half sister to Group 3 winner Greyworm, this filly has been a big talking point from the early inspections until the hammer fell. Purchased by renowned judge Brett Howard for Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds, this filly will run in the famous purple with white stars and target black-type races. David Jolly and Will Clarken joined forces to buy this athletic filly with David knowing the ability of her full sister, Allez Sur Le Gris, who won on debut. Whilst she isn’t by a Swettenham Stud stallion, this filly was born and raised at Swettenham Stud and was bought by Henry Dwyer. Siyouni has had 3 stakes performers in Australia from just 5 runners and stands for EUR140,000 so this filly was bought for significantly less than service fee. One to check out for those that haven’t been able to secure a Toronado is the colt at Daniel Nevill’s Hollylodge -by Toronado out of the Royal Academy mare Miss Fidler who has had 4 runners for 4 winners including city winner Captain Canuck and Brad, who has won 4 races in succession. Coming from the famed Gilgai Farm, just like Masked Crusader, this colt lit up the sales ring and was eventually knocked down to Richard and Michael Freedman who are red hot on the Toronado progeny. A lovely moving horse out of a stakes-performed 2yo winner, he will get every opportunity to target the big races. After a spiritedbidding war, this colt was bought by world-class judges Paul & Mike Moroney. We saw this filly as a weanling in South Australia and thought she was one of the best Highland Reel fillies out of his first crop. Bought by renowned judge Louis Le Metayer of Astute Bloodstock, noting that he wasn’t going to leave without her. Bought by multiple Group 1 winning trainer Shane Nichols, this colt hardly spent any time in his box and is a chip off the old block, just like Masked Crusader and Shelby Cobra. With Group 1 winners Microphone and Holler in his immediate family, this colt has a lot to live up to, but we are confident he is an early type with speed. Mitch Beer, one of the top border-hopping trainers in Australia, fell in love with this colt and was jumping for joy when he picked him up late in the day with the help of Heywood Bloodstock. Mitch is an expert at placing his horses in winnable races and has been dominant since his move to Albury. Peter Chow was able to snap this colt up to take to his Warrnambool stable and has been a fan of Highland Reel from day one. This colt was a standout weanling and a lovely yearling that we thought would demand a higher price but the sales ring decides the value of each yearling and this was a bargain. It is not very often you can buy a half-brother to a dual Group 1 winner by a 7-time Group 1 winner, especially not for $35k but Elite Thoroughbreds were savvy and swooped at the right time to buy this colt at incredible value. A victim of circumstance being the lot before two colts by I Am Invincible, this filly somehow got under the guard of the excited auditorium. We rated her very highly and thought she would be heading to a top trainer with just a $60k reserve. From the immediate family of Bob and Sandra Peters’ Group 1 winning mare Perfect Reflection, this is a real filly family and strikes a very similar resemblance to both Highland Reel and Galileo. Unfortunately, she was noted in printed catalogues as a colt so she may have been missed on initial inspections. We can confirm that she is a filly and a very nice filly. Congratulations to breeders Andrew and Bec McDonald, as well as Ryan and Grace at Stonehouse for setting the record sale price on day 3 as well as a record price for a Toronado yearling. This colt was a standout from the day he was born and had over 160 individual parades at the complex. Bought by some of Toronado’s biggest fans, Paul & Mike Moroney, he is in the very best of hands as he targets Group races and a potential future at stud. The second Highland Reel Filly purchased by Brett Howard’s Randwick Bloodstock at Melbourne Premier, this filly was noted by Merton Creek’s Sunny Mitchell as one of the best foal’s they’ve ever reared on the farm. One of the top trainers in Western Australia, Danny Morton was able to secure the first foal of Casino Rose for his dominant stable. Thiscolt was bred by Alan Harvey to replicate Secretariat as closely as possible and he’s managed to get a spitting image of the champion horse. Nobody knows the Puissance de Lune breed better than Mitch Freedman, having worked closely with him as a racehorse and training Moonlight Maid to be his first ever Group winner. Mitch loved this colt and thought he got him at great value from Gary and the team at Miranda Park. Most recently known for purchasing Profiteer, Jeremy Rogers has one of the best strike-rates of any bloodstock agent and teamed up with the great Archie Alexander to buy this lovely colt. Hot off producing bargain filly Chaillot to win a Group 3, Archie isflying and had this colt right at the top of his short-list. Great judge and great trainer usually results in one thing … winners. Offered very early on the final day, this colt was popular all throughout inspections but didn’t quite meet reserve. Over the past 12 months we have been following Melbourne Cup winning trainer Liam Howley’s progression from Macedon Lodge to setting up his own training establishment and we couldn’t be more impressed with what we have seen. Liam purchased the Toronado x Alittle Loose colt from Collingrove’s draft at Melbourne Premier in 2020, one of his first purchases as a trainer in his own right and he has been particularly taken with the colt’s progression since that day.
Liam and his team visited Swettenham Stud earlier this year and loved the progeny of both Toronado and Highland Reel. On the back of that, he made a number of purchases at Melbourne Premier by some of his favourite stallions. We’ve got a huge amount of faith in Liam’s training abilities and as such, we have decided to send him a couple of fillies to train on a lease arrangement.
This one was an obvious choice to send to Liam to train after hearing such glowing reports about her full brother. She’ll be leased to SwettenhamStud clients and race in the Sangster colours with the aim of retiring her to our broodmare band after a successful racing career. We’ve had an incredible amount of success with leasing fillies and we are confident that Liam will be able to get the most out of her.
Purchased on the advice of our bloodstock agent John Foote, we thought this filly was outstanding value from Armidale Stud’s draft in Tasmania. Just like the Toronado filly, she’ll be leased out with the Sangster colours and will head to Liam’s Kyneton base after heading to the breakers. Out of a Dane Shadow mare who has had one to race for a winner, she hails from the family of Sizzling and will be a welcome addition to our broodmare band at the end of her racing career.
Purchased for just $50k by Liam from Hollylodge, this colt was a steal and we really liked him from the day he was born. Miss Fidler has had 4 runners for 4 winners including9 x winner BRAD and recent city winner CAPTAIN CANUCK. Liam will train this horse and at less than half of the average of the Toronado progeny at the sale, we think he was great buying. We’ll be encouraging those who love the Toronado progeny to get involved!
Another Toronado colt born and raised at Swettenham Stud is the Miss Maggiebeel colt who is remarkably similar to his sire. Liam has already put some loyal stable clients into him and with just a small amount left, we’d recommend moving quickly.
Bred on the potent Galileo / Dubawi cross, Liam picked up this colt at a bargain price and has been telling us all about it since. We thought he was one of the best colts on the farm from the day he was born and he continued to improve with every day of the preparation. With 70% placed already, it sounds like Liam isn’t the only one that thought he was value.

The 2021 Adelaide sale was set up for success after an incredibly strong catalogue assembled by the Magic Millions team and vendors from across Australia.
Whilst the expectation was there from the vendors and the strong buying bench, it’s fair to say that nobody expected the fireworks that evolved earlier this week.

Bought by world-renowned judge Justin Bahen, this filly had looks to match her strong pedigree and this was reflected in her $180k purchase price. Bought for some of his best clients, Juzzie absolultely loved her.
Will Clarken was particularly active at this sale but it was this Highland Reel colt that he wasn’t leaving without. Bought in partnership with On Fire Racing and Suman Hedge, the spirited bidding contest finished up at $120k for the colt which looks to be a bargain if he runs up to his looks. Purchased by up and coming South Australian trainer Peter Nolan for just $45k, this filly reminded us of her sire and was very well bought. Bred by John Sinclair, this mare has been a great producer. Such was John’s confidence in this mating, the mare has a Highland Reel on the ground and is back in foal to the 7x Group 1 winner.
The first horse sold through the new Ealing Park brand, this filly was very early in the sale and snapped up by the great Ryan Balfour who will get the most out of her. We thought she’d bring a lot more than the $25k that she commanded but Ryan is one of thebest in the business at buying value and getting results, just like TRADEWIND that was bought for $18k from the same sale, who went on to win the $175 VOBIS Gold Stockade in 2020. Mick Huxtable, running at a recent strike rate of 30%, was able to snap up this colt for just $24k for his South Australian stable. Known for his results from bargain buys, we believe Mick shopped incrediblyand if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to race a well bred colt, this might be for you.
It’s not very often you can buy progeny of a 7x Group 1 winner out of a Snitzel mare for under $25k but our friends at Flying Start, along with Dave Mee from Pinhook Bloodstock, were able to steal her. Simon Wilde will train and is getting quite a collection of Highland Reel yearlings for his Warrnambool stable.
