Proven Thoroughbreds’ Proven Toronado Data (Ownership Opportunity)

September 30, 2026

The long-held perception that fillies bred on the HIGH CHAPARRAL sireline are inferior to their male counterparts is being blown up by TORONADO.

Assessing TORONADO’s last four crops of racing age (2020-2023), he’s actually had more female winners than male winners and at a superior strike rate!

Compare this to TORONADO’s first four crops (2016-2019) which produced 245 male winners (73%) v 207 female winners (67.9%).

That is a significant shift in sex-bias.

A likely explanation for this evolution is breeders becoming more adept at selecting the types of mares to mate with TORONADO.

Once it became evident that the fillies may have been lacking in physical substance, more robust mares were sent to TORONADO, and the outcome has swung the pendulum from colts and geldings to the fairer sex.

A fitting example of this can be seen in the TORONADO x STAR OF NIGHT 2yo filly Proven and trainer Joe Pride acquired this year.

STAR OF NIGHT was a tough precocious mare who raced 8 times as a 2yo before training on to win 5 races in subsequent seasons. Clearly, in the constitution department, STAR OF NIGHT was not lacking.

She has already produced a TORONADO filly that has raced competitively in Melbourne metropolitan company – HOMEWARD. And this latest TORONADO filly is the optimum physical specimen in the eyes of Joe Pride, who holds the distinction of training the sire’s best female offspring – MARIAMIA – to win the Group 1 Galaxy.
